Safeguarding Supervision That Holds the People Holding RiskLifespace has launched a dedicated Safeguarding Supervision service for schools, developed in direct response to what safeguarding and pastoral staff told us they needed most:
protected space to think, reflect and process the emotional weight of the role.Rooted in over 20 years of relational work in schools and communities, this service offers reflective, external supervision for DSLs, deputy DSLs, pastoral and safeguarding leads. It has been
independently evaluated by academic researchers, ensuring it is ethical, effective and grounded in the real pressures of safeguarding practice.
Supervision doesn’t remove safeguarding pressure. But it helps make that pressure manageable, thinkable and shared.
“I would have been stressed about that for two weeks … Then I went back to a member of staff and thought, right, how do I do this rationally? And then we got it sorted.”The National Need: Why Supervision Matters NowSafeguarding and pastoral roles carry a growing emotional and ethical burden. DSLs and safeguarding leads hold risk, uncertainty and trauma daily, often alongside increasing complexity in pupil need and pressure on external services.National guidance now reflects this reality. Supervision is increasingly recognised not as an “add‑on”, but as protective practice that supports effective safeguarding decision‑making and workforce sustainability. As one commissioning school leader reflected:
“[Supervision is about] having a space that’s not their line manager to talk to about how they’re feeling, how they’re carrying the weight of it all because it’s heavier than I think it’s ever been for DSLs.”Supervision responds to this structural, cumulative pressure - not by fixing individuals, but by supporting the system around them.
The Lifespace Approach to SupervisionLifespace supervision is reflective, relational and safeguarding‑aware. It is not line management, appraisal or inspection preparation.
Our supervisors work outside school hierarchies, offering a confidential, non‑judgemental space where staff can think clearly, process emotional impact and regain professional confidence. Boundaries are clear: supervision is confidential but not secret, with safeguarding responsibilities always paramount.
We work systemically - exploring context, culture and organisational pressures, not just individual resilience. As one supervisee described:
“In supervision you reflect back. About your previous experiences, about your current work experiences as well… and I don’t think most people understand what reflection is, and how important it is to reflect on your practice.”
If you’d like to talk through whether supervision could support your school or trust, we’d love to hear from you. Say
