What we do: Education

Summary:
Want to inspire young people about their lives and why they can behave as if they really matter? Want to give them an opportunity to see for themselves ideas and strategies they can use straight away to help make their own lives easier, safer, healthier and happier? Want to address big subjects like Sex, Alcohol, Body Image and Self-worth in a way that is relevant, enjoyable and makes sense to young people? Our workshops have a proven track record of engaging young people and allowing them to learn vital things for their lives.

Who is it for?
Our workshops are for young people aged 11-18 (Key Stages 3, 4 and 5) and are to be delivered in the context of Secondary schools and Colleges where agreements are in place.

What happens?
Education workshops of one hour are provided in the context of the school classroom within term time often as part of the National Curriculum on PSHE/Citizenship. The timetabling and precise content depends upon the school's own logistics and needs.

Key Stage 3
Personal Wellbeing
Positive Body Image
Fairtrade
Cyber Bullying
Dealing with Loss
Resolving Conflict
Key Stage 4
Self Worth
Sexually Transmitted Infections
HIV-AIDS
Alcohol
Relationships and Sexual Health
Resilience
Key Stage 5
Personal Excellence

These themes are usually delivered as one hour class workshops (to 20-25 students) and some can be adapted for delivery to larger year groups (e.g. 50-150 students). Work with Key Stage 5 is expected to be in large year groups / conference-style.

What is our approach to delivering education?
Our educators are highly trained through Oasis College (NVQ Level 3) and use a combination of visual messages, story-telling, latest neuroscience and psychology research, media clips, interactive group exercises, continuums, card activities and individual application.

Our content has been developed ourselves over the past decade, and draws from current guidelines from the World Health Organisation, the Key Messages of the Respect Yourself Campaign (Warks County Council) and through our links with rural community projects in Uganda and Ethiopia. Lifespace was also a pioneer in both the Stratford-upon-Avon and Alcester Fairtrade Town campaigns.

Outcomes and structure of the workshops fit well with the Every Child Matters outcomes (from the government, The Children Act 2004); The Dept. for Education (DfE) national strategy for 'Social & Emotional Aspects of Learning' (SEAL); Bloom's taxonomy of learning outcomes; Awareness of relevant learning domains (cognitive, affective, psychomotor); and The Respect Yourself campaign promoted by Warwickshire ~
County Council.

Our approach to education is to promote:
• Support networks and the capacity for young people to ‘be safe and feel safe’ including to whom else they can turn for help
• Accurate factual information that strengthens young people’s own ability to make healthy informed choices
• Self awareness for young people as to their own attitudes, emotions and values
• Outcome thinking – giving young people a chance to think about what they have and what they want
