What we do: Transition mentoring
Summary:
The change from Primary to Secondary school can feel massive for young people. Do you remember it? Different teachers, disrupted friendship groups, larger and noisier environment, new rooms to find, extra homework, new routines to follow, new rules to obey (!!) and uniform to get used to.
The change can feel daunting, and sometimes this can affect a young person’s view of themselves, their ability to learn and them settling in well.
You will agree that starting well is so important.
Who is it for?
Young people in year 6 (age 10-11) preparing for secondary school.
The request should come from the current Primary School, either Headteacher or Head of Year.
What happens?
One to one mentoring can provide a safe place for the young person to voice their worries, have their questions answered, and prepare them for the changes. Sometimes it is possible for the mentor to show them around their new school to get a feel for it. Continuity matters – so wherever possible the mentor will be there at the start of year 7 too as life in Secondary school kicks in. Mentors can help with organisation, friendship groups, managing emotions and behaviour, developing new routines and remind them that changes can be good, nerves are normal, and their learning can excel.
