What we do: Training for Mentors

Summary:
Lifespace offers a highly acclaimed Mentor Training programme in partnership with Oasis College who have developed the course. The accredited course (NVQ Level 3, Staffordshire University) has been delivered nationally in both the voluntary and statutory sectors and is delivered on three separate single days (usually one day per month). The course aims to provide participants with a grounding in aspects of good practice in “mentoring through intentional relationships”.

The module explores four themes:

1. Models for mentoring practice;
2. Skills for mentoring practice;
3. Policy for mentoring practice;
4. Evaluation of mentoring practice

Who is it for?
Those interested in finding out more about mentoring; those with informal or formal mentoring experience and wanting to extend their knowledge and application further; those responsible for setting up and/or managing mentoring schemes; teaching assistants; support workers; youth workers; church leaders; university graduates. Trainees need to be 18 or over to apply.

What happens?
A key emphasis throughout the module is the application of knowledge and understanding gained to actual mentoring practice. The module introduces participants to a range of tools and activities that enhance practice through role play and case studies and requires students to complete 6 hours of mentoring practice. Assessment is through a Portfolio (1,500 words). A resource pack is available for purchase to support the course teaching / activities. Details will be made available when published.

All applicants will require a CRB check (Criminal Records Bureau) and a minimum of two written references. For those wishing to then volunteer with Lifespace, a further interview will be required.
