Sometimes people think they are the only one who feels what they are feeling – moody, lonely, fed up, bad hair day, ugly, useless, stupid, bored…
The truth is everyone has days where they just feel naff. Really!
Now, if you were to draw a line showing how your feelings go up and down from one day to the next, fluctuating between
plus 10 (WOW! Brilliant!)
to zero (ok-ish, normal)
to minus 10 (Disaster! Life is awful!)
(...see the graph underneath)
...then it’s obvious that our feelings are not very reliable when it comes to understanding what we are “worth”!

Our feelings go up and down a lot (I expect you’ve noticed that haven’t you?!)
But – and this is really important to understand – our value as person, your value as a human being – does not and cannot change.
Think of a £10 note. Now, answer this question: what’s it worth? Easy – ten pounds!!

What about when it’s folded in half…or screwed up…what’s it worth then? Still ten pounds! You know that nothing can change its value, can it? (unless it is completely destroyed!)
Someone like you needs to know - right now - that you are valuable and totally unique (there’s no-one just like you!) and drop-dead-amazing. Look at your fingerprints, notice the detail. No-one else has exactly the same design.
When you feel “screwed up”, perhaps because of what someone has said, or because of something that has happened (difficult and sad stuff does happen, but it doesn’t affect how amazing we are), here’s some things you might like to just start doing to help when you’re feeling “down”:
- Stare at yourself in the mirror and notice how amazing you are made. Tell yourself “I am worth 10 out of 10 and nothing and no-one can change that”
- Think of 3 things you are really good at – sports, music, listening, making things…and 3 moments you are really proud of in your life
- Decide on something kind - right NOW - that you are going to do to help someone else – helping other people ALWAYS makes us feel better about ourselves!
